Gold Dragon and White Jade Carving presented by Emperor unearthed in Xianju

Hangzhou, Feb.25--- On Feb, 23, two treasures were excavated when workers cleaned up the Kuocang Cave of Xianju County. Checked with historical materials, confirmedly, they were the White Jade Carving and Golden Dragon, which were the same as the illustration in Historical Record of Xianju County written in the reign of Emperor Guangxu in Qing Dynasty. They were presented by Emperor of Song dynasty.



First unearthed treasure was a white jade carving, and the next was a golden dragon with 11.3 centimeters long and 7 centimeters high. It was made of the bullion with the weight of 79 grams. The dragon has four legs, three paws, two wings, two angles, three beards, and Kylin hump and fish scale, however, the shape is different from what the dragon has in folklore.







Kuocang Cave plays an important role in Chinese Taoist history. Historically there were many Taoists exercised here. Kuocang Cave was established in peak time of Tang Dynasty and in Song Dynasty it was renamed royally Ningzhen Palace. In ancient times, Kuocang Cave was ranked top –ten best cultivation caves(Dongtian, 洞天,which used to be the living residence of immortals and god) in Taoism.



According to the record of this county, this golden dragon has been in earth for 991 years. It was still dazzling when it was excavated.” It has a high-level handcraft technique, and it looks very delicate” said Guo Jinxing, the leader of History and Culture Research Society in Xianju. Both in materials and craft technology, it is very significant and this dragon carving is rare and treasured. “It is overqualified to be the state-level cultural relics, we are planning to notify the higher departments concerned” said Guo Jinxing.
